Secured vs unsecured personal loans in Australia
A secured personal loan is cheaper because something you own — often a car — can be sold if you default. Unsecured costs more and leaves the asset out of it. The rate gap is the price of that risk.

'Secured' is a polite word for 'they can take something'. Australian personal-loan ads bury it under 'rates from'. The from-rate is almost always the secured, low-LVR, excellent-credit, salaried story. The unsecured rate next to it is the one many applicants actually get.
This guide explains the security, the pricing gap, the paperwork, and when paying more to stay unsecured is the adult choice.
Unsecured: a promise and a credit file
An unsecured personal loan is backed by your contractual promise and the lender's appetite for your credit score, income and expenses. No PPSR interest over the Toyota. If you default, the lender's path is collections, default listing, possibly a court judgment. It is ugly. It is not a mortgagee sale.
Rates are higher because recoveries are worse. If you have thin credit or a casual income, some lenders will not offer unsecured at all, or will offer it at a rate that makes a card look competitive — which should make you put the brochure down.
Secured: usually a car
The typical security is a motor vehicle that meets age and type rules. The lender registers on the Personal Property Securities Register. You can usually keep driving it. You cannot quietly sell it. Some car loans are secured personal loans with a windscreen sticker; the legal idea is the same.
Using a term deposit as security can produce a very cheap rate because the lender is barely in the risk business. Using the house is not a personal loan; it is a home-loan increase with all the responsible-lending and default consequences of a mortgage.
The rate gap is the point
If unsecured is 12 per cent and secured is 8 per cent on $20,000 over five years, the interest difference is material — thousands, not coffees. That saving is the market's estimate of how much more likely they are to get paid, or get the car.
Ask yourself whether the thing you are buying is worth putting the car (or the other asset) on the line. A hospital bill might be. A European holiday is a strange thing to secure against the only vehicle that gets you to shift work.
Valuation and eligibility of the asset
Lenders cap the loan against a percentage of the car's wholesale value, not what you told your cousin you could get on Facebook Marketplace. Old cars, high-kilometre cars, modified cars, and some European marques fall outside policy. If the security is declined you are back on unsecured pricing, if you are offered anything.
Insurance: comprehensive cover is typically compulsory on a secured vehicle loan. Budget for it. Letting insurance lapse can be a default under the contract.
Default is more operational when there is security
Miss enough repayments and the lender can take the car. Sale proceeds may not cover the debt plus costs; you can still owe a shortfall. 'Secured' does not mean 'they only take the car and we call it even'.
Hardship still exists. Call before the third missed payment. Surrendering a car voluntarily can be less chaotic than waiting for a tow, but it is still a credit event.
When unsecured is worth the extra interest
- The asset you would pledge is essential to earning the money that services the loan.
- The loan is small enough that the extra interest is smaller than the hassle and risk.
- You do not want a PPSR interest complicating a planned sale.
When secured is rational
- You are already buying the car, so the security is the object of the finance.
- The gap is wide and you would not lose sleep over a repossession scenario you have actually imagined.
- You have a term deposit you will not need.
Worked sketch
$15,000 over 4 years. Unsecured 13.5 per cent plus $250 fee versus secured 8.9 per cent plus $250. Monthly gap of tens of dollars, total interest gap in the low thousands. If the security is a second car, the thousands may be worth it. If the security is the only car and the loan is for a wedding, the thousands are cheap compared with losing the commute.
Read the contract's default and enforcement pages. They are not boilerplate. They are the product.
Guarantors on personal loans
Some lenders will take a guarantor instead of (or as well as) vehicle security. That is a relationship product. The guarantor should get independent legal advice. If the only way the rate works is your parent on the hook for a wedding, the wedding is too expensive.
Refinancing a secured loan when you sell the car
Selling the car requires the lender's cooperation to lift the PPSR interest. The loan may need to be paid out from proceeds. If you are short, you are applying for an unsecured residual or another product. Do not sell the car privately and hope.
Insurance lapses
Comprehensive insurance is usually compulsory. If you let it lapse, you can be in default while still making repayments. Set the insurance to annual direct debit from an account that actually has money.
PPSR for ordinary humans
After a secured car-backed personal loan starts, you should see a registration against the vehicle. When you pay out, you should see it end. Check. If you sell privately, the buyer will check. A leftover registration is a leftover problem.
Keep the payout letter. Lenders are large; large organisations lose letters. Your folder is the adult in the room.
Default, in plain language
Miss enough secured repayments and a person will come for the car. Miss enough unsecured repayments and a different process begins — letters, default listing, possibly court. Neither is a 'reset'. Both are worse than ringing hardship early. Australian consumer credit law expects lenders to consider hardship. Use it. Do not hide and hope the PPSR forgets you.
Documents to bring, and a last caution
When you sit down with a lender, broker, packager or yard manager, bring the car's registration, a valuation guide printout, insurance quote, and your credit-file PDFs. If they will not look at paper, they are selling speed. Speed is expensive in Australian credit.
Write down the thing you are afraid to ask — the fee, the balloon, the HELP treatment, the break cost — and ask it first, while you still have the nerve. The second conversation is always weaker. If the answer is vague, you do not have an answer.
This desk would rather you delay a week than sign a contract whose comparison rate you cannot explain to a friend. ASIC's MoneySmart remains the public-interest spare brain: use it the night before, not the morning after. And if the product only works on overtime that is not in your contract, it does not work. Buy a smaller thing, or wait. Waiting is still allowed.
People also ask
- What can I use as security for a personal loan?
- Commonly a vehicle the lender can register an interest in. Some lenders take term deposits or other assets. Your home is usually a different product — a home-loan top-up — not a 'personal loan' in the unsecured sense.
- Why is a secured personal loan cheaper?
- Because the lender's loss given default is lower if they can sell the security. You are paying less interest in exchange for putting an asset in the firing line.
- What happens if I default on a secured personal loan?
- The lender can repossess and sell the security, then pursue any shortfall. On an unsecured loan they cannot take the car through the loan contract, but they can still collect via the courts and the credit file.
